In a closely contested decision on Friday, the Virginia Supreme Court determined that Democrats in the state unlawfully orchestrated a referendum on newly proposed congressional maps. As a result, the court nullified the congressional districts that voters had approved last month.
The 4-3 ruling reinstates the previous district boundaries established following the 2020 census.

Currently, Virginia’s representation in the U.S. House includes six Democrats and five Republicans. Political analysts suggested that the map advanced by state Democrats could have secured them 10 out of Virginia’s 11 House seats, enhancing their chances of regaining control of the chamber in the upcoming November elections.
