Tragic Incident: Mother Accused of Fatally Suffocating 5-Year-Old with Plastic Bag

In a tragic incident that has shaken the community, a Montana woman is accused of suffocating her 5-year-old son with a plastic bag, claiming her actions were meant to “save him because things would have only gotten so much worse.” The case has raised serious concerns and sparked widespread discussions about mental health and family dynamics.

Kathryn Garaas faces charges of deliberate homicide following the death of her son, Reign Tyler Blair, at their residence near Whitehall, located approximately 60 miles northwest of Bozeman. The circumstances surrounding the case have left many in disbelief.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies were dispatched to the home on the afternoon of April 24 in response to a medical emergency. The situation unfolded after Reign’s father, alarmed by a distressing text message from Garaas, requested a welfare check on his son, according to an arrest affidavit sourced by local CBS affiliate KRTV.

When law enforcement officers arrived, Garaas greeted them at the door, directing them to her son’s room with the words, “he’s in his room.” The grim discovery followed as deputies entered the room, finding Reign with a plastic bag over his head, as detailed in the affidavit. Tragically, the young boy was already deceased.

In a statement to the authorities, Garaas allegedly revealed her justification for the horrific act, stating that she believed she needed to “save him because things would have only gotten so much worse.” Her words have only added to the complexity and tragedy of this heartbreaking situation.

Colleen Much, who started a GoFundMe account on behalf of Reign’s family, said in an interview with KRTV that Garaas was previously separated from the family. But Garaas had been staying with the boy and his father for weeks leading up to the murder without incident.

“I cannot and will absolutely not pretend to claim we have even a remote understanding of the reasoning behind this, or what occurred,” Much wrote in the description. “We pray for answers that may never come, and when they do, no healing will come of it.”

Much called Reign a “precious, innocent, perfect, beautiful little light” who was raised by his father.

“Reign is his purpose, his love, and his life from the moment he took his first breath,” Much wrote. “There are no words for the kind of strength it takes for a man to be a single father, and the life he built for Reign is one we take solace in knowing was fulfilled with love, laughter, and precious joy.”

Garaas is at the Jefferson County Jail without bond. Her next court date is set for June 10.
