The family of a 19-year-old woman found deceased at a landfill site is grappling with the news that prosecutors have decided to drop the manslaughter charge against the man accused of her death.
Marat Ganiev, 55, was initially charged with the death of Isla Bell, whose body was allegedly concealed in a refrigerator after her untimely demise on October 7, 2024.
The manslaughter charge against Ganiev has been officially retracted.
Instead, Ganiev faces a new charge for attempting to obstruct justice, with an updated indictment anticipated to be submitted by the end of the day.
While the date for the new trial has not yet been determined, the defense is expected to receive a detailed summary of the allegations within the next two weeks.
David Spokes, Bell’s grandfather, expressed that the situation marks an especially challenging day for their family.
“There are many things that I would like to say but I can’t say today because there are more charges pending,” he told reporters outside court.
“We have done our utmost not to jeopardise that. At the appropriate time, we will have more to say.”
Bell’s mother Justine Spokes also expressed her disappointment.
“I raised Isla to be full of compassion and care and integrity and strength,” she told reporters.
“We’re just living in a society with hearts of stone.”
Eyal Yaffe, 59, was also originally accused of assisting an offender and attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to Bell’s death.
McWilliams today also confirmed Yaffe’s charges would be discontinued.
Yaffe declined to comment as he used crutches to walk out of court a free man.
A spokeswoman for the Office of Public Prosecutions confirmed the charges had been withdrawn due to “insufficient evidence” to support the offences.
