Rubio offers Cuban people 'new relationship' in Spanish-language message

In a recent statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended an olive branch to the people of Cuba, suggesting the possibility of a “new relationship” with the United States. His message, however, was sharply critical of the Communist regime currently controlling the island.

Rubio addressed his remarks to the Cuban populace in a Spanish-language message posted on X Wednesday morning. He refuted claims that U.S. policies are responsible for the nation’s energy crisis, where citizens reportedly endure up to 22 hours a day without electricity. Instead, he placed the blame squarely on the GAESA conglomerate, a powerful entity run by Cuba’s armed forces and established by former leader Raul Castro.

“Cuba is under the control of GAESA,” Rubio declared. “While you endure hardships, these businessmen amass $18 billion in assets and dominate 70% of Cuba’s economy.” His critique highlighted the vast economic disparity between the ruling elite and the struggling populace.

Further emphasizing the U.S. commitment to supporting the Cuban people, Rubio reiterated former President Trump’s proposal for a renewed U.S.-Cuba relationship. He stressed that this should be directly with the citizens of Cuba, bypassing the GAESA conglomerate entirely. As part of this potential partnership, Rubio mentioned an offer of $100 million in food and medical supplies, to be distributed through the Catholic Church and other non-governmental organizations.

In a related development, the Justice Department is expected to unveil an indictment against Raul Castro later on Wednesday. The charges will reportedly accuse him of orchestrating the 1996 shootdown of two Miami-based rescue planes, an attack that resulted in the deaths of four individuals.
