Blumenthal: If Dems Win Midterms We Can 'Stop' the Anti-Weaponization Fund

On Thursday’s episode of “The Briefing” on MS NOW, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) brought attention to a potential legal strategy the Democrats could employ if they seize control of either or both chambers of Congress in the approaching midterm elections. He suggested that they might pursue a lawsuit to halt the Department of Justice’s controversial anti-weaponization fund.

Blumenthal shared insights into the internal dynamics among Republicans, expressing his belief that former President Trump may have pushed Senate Republicans into an uncomfortable position. “The ballroom itself,” he said, referring to the metaphorical political dance floor, “was absolutely abhorrent to them because it’s so deeply unpopular.” Many Republicans, he disclosed, were relieved when the parliamentarian ruled out the inclusion of the fund in the reconciliation package. This ruling spared them from having to vote on a measure they feared could jeopardize their prospects in the November elections. In private conversations, some Republican senators confided they had no intention of supporting the measure even before a figure named Blanche engaged them in discussions.

Senator Blumenthal underscored the opportunity for elected officials to demonstrate integrity and accountability. “I think there’s a real possibility for conscience to be demonstrated,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the moment. He outlined several potential remedies, including legislative amendments and the prospect of reclaiming some of the funds should a Democratic administration take power. Moreover, he highlighted the possibility of a lawsuit if Democrats gain control of Congress. These potential courses of action, he noted, remain open irrespective of Republican actions, offering a pathway for principled decision-making in Washington.
