In the heart of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, a touching memorial has taken form near the shore, commemorating the tragic loss of a young life. Over the weekend, a heartbreaking incident unfolded when a 22-month-old girl, Avery Lynn, was fatally struck by a vehicle. The community has come together, expressing their sorrow and remembrance in a poignant display.

Just steps from Seventh Avenue, where the Volusia Sheriff’s Office reports the toddler dashed into a driving lane, a collective outpouring of grief is evident. Photos of Avery Lynn, delicate flowers, and heartfelt handwritten notes now rest, marking the spot where the tragedy occurred.

Among the tributes, a note poignantly describes Avery Lynn as “her mother’s princess,” inviting those who visit to leave seashells in her honor—a small but meaningful gesture to remember a life taken too soon.

On Monday, family members, including the child’s grieving mother, were seen at the memorial, a somber reminder of the love and loss felt by those who knew Avery Lynn.

The driver involved in the incident remained on the scene, cooperating with investigators who have indicated that neither speed nor impairment appear to be contributing factors in the accident.

“It’s just sad. You have to watch your kids so close,” remarked Tony Cook, a local resident who found himself on the beach shortly after the accident occurred, underscoring the vigilance required in protecting our youngest.

“It was very sad. You had tons of help that was here, but it was a very instant and spontaneous thing that happened,” Cook said.

Cook added that the beach was especially crowded Saturday.

“We are certainly overcrowded here on weekends and holidays, and that’s when you have the biggest problems,” he said.

In a statement to News 6, the Professional Firefighters of Orange City said Avery Lynn was part of their extended family.

“Our hearts are with Avery Lynn’s family and everyone impacted by this unimaginable tragedy,” the statement read. “We encourage everyone to hold their loved ones a little closer, look out for one another.”

Beachgoers visiting from across Central Florida also reacted to the tragedy.

“That’s heartbreaking. I want to pray over their family. I know this is a difficult time,” said Traevis Saint Louis, who was visiting the beach from Orlando.

Saint Louis said both drivers and pedestrians should remain alert, especially during busy holiday weekends.

“Definitely, to have those people driving on the beach to be careful,” he said.
