Chicago shooting: Person in custody released after Tilden High School student Pedro Ramirez shot, killed in Back of the Yards

A person of interest linked to the tragic shooting of a 17-year-old honor roll student in Chicago has been released without charges, according to local police. The incident, which took place in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, has left the community in shock as authorities continue their investigation.

On Tuesday morning, the young victim was shot multiple times in the 5000 block of South Throop Street. The family has identified the teenager as Pedro Ramirez, a promising student whose life was cut short. Two adults also sustained injuries during the shooting.

Despite the release of the person of interest, Chicago police remain committed to solving the case and are actively pursuing any leads that may arise. At this time, no one has been charged in connection with the incident.

The loss of Ramirez has had a profound impact on those close to him. “One moment you’re just talking, and the next, he’s gone. It’s incredibly hard to process that you’ll never see him again,” expressed Adelynn Peña, Ramirez’s girlfriend, highlighting the emotional toll of this senseless act of violence.

Chicago police say they’re still tracking down leads in the shooting, and no charges have been filed.

“One point, you’re just talking, and then from another, he’s just gone. And it is very hard to just, like, put that in your mind just that you’re never going to see him again,” said Adelynn Peña, Ramirez’s girlfriend.

The girlfriend of Pedro Ramirez struggles to make sense of boyfriend’s murder. The 17-year-old was a straight-A, honor-roll student at Tilden High School.

A small memorial is growing near the scene.

“He always said, ‘I will never miss school unless I’m very sick, or unless I’m dying,’” said Mario Rosales, Ramirez’s best friend. “He actually died, so it really hurts my heart about those words that he said now.”

Police said two men in a van were also shot and are recovering. Officers chased down the suspects a few blocks away.

Chicago Public Schools said in a statement, “All of us at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are saddened to learn of the loss of this young person’s life and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, school and community members impacted by this tragedy.”

CPS will offer support services to students and staff.

Chicago police continue to investigate.
