GA great-grandmother killed in unprovoked Atlanta train stabbing
A 66-year-old great-grandmother was tragically killed in an unprovoked stabbing aboard a train in Atlanta, prompting federal charges against John Elijah Matthews. Her grieving daughter is demanding answers about transit system security. Bruce Levell, the former chairman of MARTA operations, has voiced concerns about safety on the city’s busiest transit system, pointing to the challenges posed by homeless individuals seeking refuge on trains.
The federal government, under the Trump administration, is initiating an investigation into Atlanta’s transit system following two recent stabbing incidents, including the fatal attack on the elderly woman on a MARTA train.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the Federal Transit Administration will conduct an audit of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to assess both worker and rider safety, amid reports of a worrying spike in violent incidents.
“I demand ANSWERS from Atlanta,” Duffy expressed in a post on X, highlighting that the assault, robbery, and rape rates on MARTA’s trains exceed the national average by over three times.
This inquiry comes in the wake of the murder of Margaret Swan, a great-grandmother, who was brutally stabbed to death on an Atlanta train, allegedly by a homeless man.
John Elijah Matthews has been charged at the federal level with committing an act of violence causing death on a mass transportation system, in connection with the alleged murder of Margaret Swan on a MARTA train. (@SecDuffy/X)
