Ex-ESPN Host Erupts After Former NBA Player Declares for WNBA Draft

A public figure has usually struck a nerve when an online argument erupts almost instantly—and this one did not take long to ignite.

Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom set off a fresh round of debate after announcing that he was putting his name forward for the WNBA draft.

The complication, of course, is that Freedom’s announcement appeared to be a deliberate challenge to the conversation around gender identity and women’s sports, rather than a conventional WNBA draft declaration.

That puts the WNBA in a difficult public-relations position: explaining where it draws the line on self-identification, eligibility, and competitive standards in women’s professional basketball.
