Mexican 'Batman' vigilante wanted for chasing down suspected motorbike thieves, taping them to lampposts

Authorities in Mexico are searching for a vigilante nicknamed “Batman,” who is accused of tracking down suspected motorcycle thieves in the city and binding them to lampposts, according to a report.

The incidents reportedly began June 13 in the Lagos de Moreno area of Jalisco, where at least five men were found over a 10-day span duct-taped to street poles, The Sun reported.

Images shared on X by Mexican journalist Luis Cárdenas appeared to show several of the men with mustaches, cat-like whiskers and the Spanish word for “thief” written across their faces.

Cárdenas referred to the unknown vigilante as the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno.” The report said the person behind the attacks allegedly left the stolen motorcycles near the bound men, apparently as a public display of the accusations against them.

In one image, two men were seen taped back-to-back against a pole, with a pink sign placed above them and a motorcycle positioned in front of the scene.

State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández said police are treating the men who were tied up as victims while investigators work to identify and apprehend the vigilante, according to the outlet.

The men were eventually cut free from the posts and received treatment for their injuries. It remains unclear whether any of them are being investigated in connection with the alleged motorcycle thefts.

No arrests have been made so far, though police have reportedly identified two vehicles that may be linked to the incidents.
