By the time Monday’s World Cup fixtures are finished, a number of teams will have played their final match of the tournament.
WASHINGTON — At this stage of the World Cup, the equation is simple: win and advance, or lose and head home.
The tournament’s knockout rounds are now in motion, with teams battling to keep their title hopes alive and secure places in the next phase. Canada booked a spot in the round of 16 on Sunday after defeating South Africa.
Brazil also punched its ticket in dramatic fashion, edging Japan 2-1 thanks to a decisive goal in the closing moments.
Monday’s remaining games will determine the future for several contenders, among them Germany, Paraguay, the Netherlands and Morocco.
Here is a look at which teams have been knocked out and which are still chasing the World Cup trophy:
How does the knockout round work?
Once the group stage concludes, the competition moves into a 32-team knockout bracket. That phase starts June 28 and runs for three weeks, with teams progressing through a series of single-elimination matchups.
Beginning with the round of 32 and continuing through the round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals, every match becomes must-win for teams hoping to stay in the championship hunt.
The World Cup final is scheduled for July 19, capping off the tournament.

Can there be a draw in the World Cup knockout round?
Games during the group stage can end in draws, but that was the only time during the tournament when that could happen. In those matches, rather than going into extra time, the game ended, and one point was awarded to each team.
Now that the knockout round has begun, draws are no longer possible.
Instead, extra time will be used if a game is tied after 90 minutes of play. Extra time consists of two 15-minute halves.
If both teams are still tied at the end of the extra time, the match will be decided in a penalty shootout.
Both teams alternate taking kicks from the penalty spot. The team that scores the most out of five wins the round. If no goals are made in the first five tries, the penalties go into sudden death, and penalty shots are taken until one team scores and the other team misses.
The 2022 World Cup finale, featuring Lionel Messi from Argentina and France’s Kylian Mbappé, ended with a penalty shootout.
