ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez said afternoon highs Thursday are expected to climb into the mid-90s, with heat index readings reaching as high as 105 degrees.

A few storms may also develop later Thursday evening.

On Friday, the Chicago area faces a Level 2 risk for severe weather, with damaging wind gusts and hail the primary concerns during the afternoon hours.

Although the Extreme Heat Warning is set to expire Friday, the heat will not disappear. Forecast highs are expected to hover near 90 degrees, with heat index values pushing into the upper 90s.

For the Fourth of July, storms could move through early in the morning, followed by another chance for storms late in the afternoon, as hot and humid conditions continue.

Health professionals and city leaders are urging residents to look in on neighbors, drink plenty of water and take advantage of cooling centers when necessary.

The best way to avoid heat-related illness and stay safe is to stay indoors and use fans and air conditioning to keep your home cool. Limit your time outdoors. Stay out of the sun. Wear loose, light clothing and drink lots of water and fluids to remain hydrated.

The city set up cooling centers across Chicago.

People can also find relief at one of the city’s public libraries, Chicago Park District fieldhouses, as well as pools and splash pads.
