James Carville says AOC has no shot at Democratic nomination for president

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) would face virtually no path to the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination if she chose to enter the race, veteran Democratic strategist James Carville said this week.

Carville, 81, argued that the progressive New York congresswoman and prominent “Squad” member sits too far to the left of the voters who typically shape Democratic presidential primaries, a bloc he says has often favored candidates closer to the political center.

Speaking Thursday on the “Greta Wire” podcast, Carville said Democrats have long resisted nominating their most liberal contender, even in turbulent election cycles such as 1972. He suggested that conservatives often imagine the party will elevate a socialist or deeply urban progressive, but he said that scenario does not match Democratic primary history.

Carville, best known as a key architect of Bill Clinton’s winning 1992 presidential campaign, did not dismiss Ocasio-Cortez’s abilities. He credited her political talent and her congressional operation, while still insisting that a White House bid would be unrealistic.

He told host Greta Van Susteren that Ocasio-Cortez is “remarkably talented” and praised the quality of her staff work, but said plainly that he does not believe she will run for president because, in his view, she would have no real chance of winning the nomination.

Carville pointed to the Democratic primary calendar, particularly the influence of Black voters in Southern states such as South Carolina, as a major obstacle for any national campaign by Ocasio-Cortez.

He said those voters play a decisive role in choosing the Democratic nominee and argued that they are not as ideologically liberal as Ocasio-Cortez’s most enthusiastic supporters may assume.

Ocasio-Cortez, one of the country’s most recognizable democratic socialist figures, has repeatedly been floated by political observers as a possible candidate for president or the U.S. Senate in 2028.

Among the crop of potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidates – which includes former Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro – Ocasio-Cortez typically polls in the top five.
