Underage girl totals car while drag racing in SoCal

A juvenile driver survived a violent suspected drag racing crash in Long Beach after her car overturned and was left heavily damaged late Friday night.

Long Beach police said officers were called to the intersection of Spring Street and Kilroy Airport Way at about 11:51 p.m. after the crash damaged a traffic control box and disabled the signal lights in the area.

Video recorded moments after the wreck captured the young driver, identified by authorities only as a juvenile, visibly distraught as bystanders approached to check on her. Crying at the scene, she said she had been behind the wheel and that no one else was inside the vehicle.

The car was shown overturned on its side near a concrete wall, its body crushed from the impact.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the overturned vehicle had been traveling eastbound Spring Street racing a second vehicle before the driver lost control. The other vehicle did not remain on scene,” police told The Post.

Additional footage from the scene showed emergency medical workers speaking with the girl before placing her on a gurney to be taken for treatment.

The Long Beach Fire Department said the driver was able to get herself out of the wrecked vehicle before crews transported her.

Authorities said she was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The teenage girl appeared lucky to survive the crash.

The vehicle’s destroyed state made its make and model unrecognizable. The front of the vehicle is seen shredded with cut metal and wires splayed about.

It’s unclear if any charges have been filed.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
