Vice President JD Vance, second lady Usha welcome 4th child

Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance welcomed their fourth child Sunday morning, a rare milestone that marks the first birth to a sitting vice president’s family in more than 150 years.

Usha Vance gave birth to Alec Neel Vance, the couple’s third son, at Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland, the vice president said in a statement announcing the baby’s arrival.

“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning,” Vance wrote.

“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the vice president added, expressing gratitude to the Walter Reed medical team for ensuring a safe delivery.

Alec Neel joins three siblings in the Vance household: Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.

Vance, 41, and Usha, 40, who married in 2014, revealed in January that they were expecting, setting up a historically unusual moment for a second family in the White House era.

The most recent time a sitting vice president and second lady had a child was 156 years ago, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax Jr., who served under Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen welcomed their son, Schuyler Colfax III.

The Vances are also among several senior Trump administration figures who have expanded their families over the past year.

Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, and his wife Katie welcomed their son Hawthorne Hayes in June.

Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, and her husband Nicholas Riccio welcomed her second child, a daughter Vivianna, in early May.

Vance himself has long been an advocate for Americans to have “more babies.”

He’s also argued that more should be done to support families bringing children into the world.

“We will work to offer a loving hand to new mothers and young families, and we will support adoption and foster care. We will protect women and vulnerable children,” Vance said in his debut speech as vice president.

He and Usha have also said that conversations with Charlie Kirk’s widow Erika, who regretted only having two children with the Trump ally, also influenced their decision to have a fourth child.

“I think it really heightened JD’s sense that he’d been talking about this for a while, this sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had,” Usha said.
