CVS Launches New Pharmacy Option for Pet Owners

Pet owners can now get many common prescriptions for dogs and cats filled at more than 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations across the United States.

CVS Health said Tuesday that CVS Pharmacy has begun dispensing select prescription medications for pets, expanding access to treatments commonly used for dogs and cats. The available medications include antibiotics, allergy medicines, flea and tick treatments, insulin and pain relievers.

For eligible pet prescriptions, customers may also use pharmacy conveniences such as automatic refills and prescription synchronization. Some medications may also qualify for home delivery.

“We know that CVS Pharmacy is a trusted partner in our patients’ health care journeys,” Sid Tenneti, senior vice president and interim president of Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness at CVS Health, said in a statement Tuesday. “With the launch of pet medication dispensing, our pharmacies are now able to serve every member of the family.”

To fill a pet prescription, owners can bring a written prescription from their veterinarian to a CVS Pharmacy or have the veterinarian send it directly to the pharmacy. After CVS receives the prescription, customers can pick it up in store or choose delivery when the medication is eligible, the company said.

Customers can also add pets to their CVS.com profile and manage eligible pet medications through the CVS Health app.

CVS Health said it plans to roll out more features in the months ahead, including electronic prescribing tools for veterinarians.

By adding pet prescriptions to its pharmacy services, CVS joins other major retailers, including Publix, Costco, Walmart and Walgreens, that already offer similar options.
