Hatchet-Wielding Attacker Hacks Bicyclist During California Rush Hour

A bicyclist was stabbed near the ribs by a man armed with a small hatchet following a confrontation in Fresno on Monday morning, authorities said.

Fresno police were called to the area of Belmont Avenue and Effie Street around 7:45 a.m. after reports of a stabbing, according to The Fresno Bee.

Investigators said the victim was riding west on Belmont with a friend when the suspect emerged from a nearby neighborhood and began arguing with them. During the dispute, the man allegedly pulled out a small hatchet and stabbed the cyclist near the right rib cage and back.

Police cordoned off part of Belmont Avenue and a bus stop at the intersection while they investigated the attack. The injured bicyclist was transported to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have not released the names of either the victim or the suspect.

The incident comes after another Fresno stabbing in late July, when two people were arrested following a dispute at a gas station. Police said the confrontation began when one driver pulled in for fuel as another driver was backing up to use the same pump.

“What we were told was there was a victim of a stabbing. My officers arrived on scene, located the victim over here in the bushes with significant stab wound to his right thigh area,” Officer Alfonso Castillo told CBS47.

In a separate case, a person was stabbed outside the city’s Superior Courthouse in early June by a 25-year-old man, authorities previously reported.

“Around 12:15 pm on Tuesday, a disturbance took place between two men outdoors, between the Hall of Records and the main Superior Courthouse. One of the men ultimately collapsed after being stabbed multiple times,” the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office release in a statement at the time of the incident.
