A high-profile bid for a political comeback by one of the Democratic Party’s most outspoken progressive figures came to an abrupt end Tuesday night.
Rep. Wesley Bell decisively defeated former Rep. Cori Bush in the Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, dealing a major blow to Bush’s hopes of reclaiming her seat.
The closely watched primary became a proxy fight over Israel, the role of AIPAC, and the growing power of outside political spending in Democratic contests.
Even before the race was officially called, Bush offered a sharp assessment of her opponent, saying, “He is actually, in my opinion, a Republican.”
With almost all votes tallied, Bell led Bush by 51 percent to 46 percent, handing the progressive activist-turned-lawmaker another defeat and effectively closing the door on her immediate return to Congress.
The campaign was shaped in large part by the political fallout Bush faced after the October 7, 2023, terror attacks in Israel, as she drew national attention for her criticism of Israeli government actions and her demands for a ceasefire in Gaza.
As the primary intensified, organizations tied to AIPAC emerged as some of the most influential forces working to defeat her.
The United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with AIPAC, poured millions into the race to boost Bell and target Bush, with reports estimating about $3 million in outside spending aligned with Bell’s campaign.

She quickly became one of the most recognizable members of ‘The Squad,’ building a national profile around policing, racial justice, healthcare, abortion rights and foreign policy.
That national attention became both her strength and her weakness.
Bush argued that her criticism of Israel’s conduct in Gaza and opposition to AIPAC-backed efforts made her a target, while critics accused her of focusing more on national activism than the everyday concerns of St. Louis voters.
During the 2024 campaign, opponents questioned her constituent services and argued she was better known nationally than locally. Bell capitalized on those concerns, presenting himself as a more accessible Democrat focused on public safety and district priorities.
Bush also faced controversy over her support for the ‘defund the police’ movement and her campaign’s spending on private security after receiving threats. Critics said the issue raised questions about her views on policing, while Bush defended the expenses as necessary for her safety.
A later Justice Department investigation into campaign security spending became another political challenge, though she denied wrongdoing and no criminal charges were filed.
