Trump Warns Hochul-Mamdani Pied-à-Terre Tax Could Ruin NYC

President Trump on Tuesday tore into New York’s new tax on high-end second homes, calling the luxury property surcharge “pure Amateur Hour” and warning it could “RUIN” New York City.

In a blistering post on Truth Social, Trump said he would explore whether the federal government has any authority to intervene before, in his view, the policy damages his hometown.

“I am looking to see if the Federal Government has any legal right to avert this disaster, before it is too late, for the millions of people who cherish New York and want to see it thrive, as opposed to becoming a filthy, crime ridden, decrepit place of mockery and scorn,” he wrote.

“This dangerous political ‘experiment’ in New York will destroy what was once a great City and State. It is pure Amateur Hour, and it’s hard, as President of the United States of America, to sit back and watch it happen, especially to a place I once loved,” Trump added in the sharply worded post.

His comments came one day after a Staten Island judge temporarily blocked Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rollout of the surcharge amid a lawsuit alleging the city was mishandling the measure and placing an unfair burden on homeowners.

Mamdani’s administration has appealed the temporary restraining order, leaving the tax in place for now while the dispute moves toward a hearing before a higher court.

The pied-à-terre tax, approved by state lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul, targets owners of luxury second homes in New York City valued at $5 million or more, with a lower $1 million threshold for co-ops and condos.
