A Texas man has been jailed after authorities say he fatally shot his cousin shortly after the relative had helped him out.
Michael Calhoun, 43, is accused of first-degree murder, the Waco Police Department said.
The shooting happened on the night of Sunday, Aug. 9, and left 49-year-old Yotanca Calhoun dead, according to investigators.
Waco police said officers were called to the victim’s home on Summer Avenue shortly after 9:45 p.m. following reports of a shooting, according to a department press release.
“When officers arrived, they located the victim and immediately began medical aid, he was pronounced deceased on scene,” police said in the release.
Yotanca Calhoun’s wife was inside the home when Michael Calhoun allegedly shot and killed him, according to a warrant obtained by Waco-based CBS and Telemundo affiliate KWTX.
According to authorities, the evening had appeared to begin without any sign of violence.
Earlier that evening, Michael Calhoun came over and asked to use the shower because he was sweaty, the wife told police, according to the charging document. While the defendant showered, the couple sat on the living room couch and waited for him, police said.
But when Michael Calhoun got out of the bathroom, he allegedly said, “This is for you,” and opened fire on his cousin, the wife told police.
Amid the gunfire, the woman dropped to the floor and hid underneath a table, according to the warrant. The defendant attempted to shoot her, too, but he soon ran out of bullets, the wife told police.
Next, the woman took the opportunity to run and hide in a bedroom closet, police said. As she took shelter, Michael Calhoun allegedly called out to her and said, “Don’t do it,” according to the warrant.
Eventually, the newly widowed woman heard the defendant leave, law enforcement said. So, she got out of the closet and found her husband on the floor suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his head, neck, shoulder, chest and groin, according to the charging document.
When police arrived, Michael Calhoun was no longer at the scene of the crime, according to the press release. Officers arrested him later that same night along the 2600 block of Alexander Avenue, roughly five blocks south of where the shooting occurred, police said.
The defendant is currently detained in the McLennan County Jail on $1 million bond.
