California McDonald’s Worker Killed by Police After Allegedly Shooting Coworker

A McDonald’s worker in California was shot and killed by police Monday after authorities say he opened fire inside the restaurant, injuring a female co-worker and firing at a responding officer.

Jonhatan Anguiano, 29, walked into the San Joaquin County McDonald’s at about 9:30 a.m. carrying a semi-automatic pistol, according to police.

Investigators said Anguiano fired several rounds inside the store, striking a female employee. Officials have not yet determined what prompted the attack.

Police later released a surveillance image of Anguiano taken shortly before the fatal confrontation, showing him dressed in a McDonald’s uniform and wearing a long black sleeve on his right arm.

Officers with the Lodi Police Department arrived to find the wounded woman at the restaurant. As officers moved in, authorities said Anguiano fired at one of them, prompting police to return fire.

“The suspect was ultimately pronounced deceased on scene,” the Lodi Police Department said. The injured co-worker was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is now overseeing a multi-agency investigation into the shooting.

“I was in the drive-thru at the cashier window when the shots were fired. I heard 4 shots being fired inside. Scary times,” said Cheryl Marie Steneck.

Lodi City Councilmember Cameron Bregman, who lives just a block from the McDonald’s, called the shooting both unacceptable and alarming for the local community.

“Lodi is a very small town, and so there’s about four or five stories already circling. Right. The best thing I can do is let the police do the work and let the police release the reports,” Bregman told KCRA.

Lodi police is urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or may have information about the incident to contact Detective Blythe at 209-333-5545.
