Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) likened President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement to the Confederacy, arguing that its influence extends beyond one election or one occupant of the White House.
Pressley delivered the comments Monday during an appearance at Roxbury Community College in Boston, where she was campaigning on behalf of Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) in his Democratic primary contest against Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA).
“It is bigger than Trump,” Pressley said. “Because whenever we do the work of ousting the occupant of the Oval Office, the Confederacy is still alive and well. That’s all MAGA is.”
She went on to frame the movement as part of a broader struggle against racism. “White supremacy is still alive and well,” Pressley continued. “Anti-blackness will still be alive and well.”
Markey is running for another Senate term while facing a Democratic primary challenge from Moulton. Pressley endorsed Markey in March after earlier weighing whether to mount a Senate bid herself.
When she announced her support, Pressley cited their shared work on immigration, criminal justice reform, and a range of progressive policy goals.
“I am proud to endorse his re-election so we can continue advancing the justice-driven solutions our communities need to not only survive, but thrive,” Pressley said.
