Mother Gets 4 Years in Prison for Manslaughter in Crash That Killed Her Children

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Christina Shantell Gordan, 30, will spend four years in state prison followed by 15 years on probation after pleading nolo contendere to two counts of aggravated manslaughter of a child. The case stemmed from a July 2025 crash in which her two small children died after investigators said they were riding without child safety seats.

Gordan entered an open plea under an agreement that allowed the judge to sentence below the scoresheet minimum of 289.5 months. Both prosecutors and the defense agreed the prison portion would be capped at five years, though the plea paperwork noted that the charges carried a possible maximum penalty of 60 years behind bars.

Judge Denise Ferrero imposed two four-year state prison terms to run at the same time, followed by 15 years of probation. Gordan received credit for 15 days already served.

Original incident

According to the Gainesville Police Department investigation, the fatal crash happened at about 6:07 a.m. on July 10 as Gordan was traveling west on SW Williston Road. Police said another driver, who was turning left onto I-75, failed to yield to Gordan’s vehicle, triggering the collision. Witnesses who rushed to the scene reportedly found a 6-month-old infant on the driver’s side floorboard between Gordan’s legs. Gordan then allegedly told them there was another child in the vehicle, and a 22-month-old was found on the front passenger floorboard. Both children were taken as trauma alerts to UF Health Shands, where they later died from their injuries.

Investigators reported that no child safety seats were located inside the passenger area of Gordan’s vehicle. One infant car seat, without its base, was found in the trunk. Police also said the driver and front passenger seatbelts were locked in the retracted position, leading them to determine that none of the occupants appeared to be wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred. Based on the evidence, investigators concluded the infant was likely on Gordan’s lap, while the toddler was likely unrestrained in the front passenger seat.

The investigation determined that Gordan’s failure to properly secure the children in legally required car seats amounted to culpable negligence and caused their deaths. Investigators wrote that her “failure and omission” to place the children in car seats in the rear of the vehicle, as required under Florida law, led to catastrophic injuries that proved fatal in the crash.
