President Trump lashed out at New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday, accusing the Democrat of siding with Canada after she said her state would not recognize his newly declared name for Lake Ontario: “Lake America.”
“Governor Kathy Hochul is for Canada,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, claiming the country “has been ripping off New York State for years, especially under her Administration, instead of the good ‘ol USA.”
He continued, “Can you imagine her saying that she won’t respect or acknowledge LAKE AMERICA,” before adding, “That’s why the Dumocrats are so bad for our Country.”
The outburst came a day after Trump signed documents directing that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America,” a change he said would take effect immediately as tensions with Canada escalate during an ongoing trade dispute.
Lake Ontario borders roughly 250 miles of shoreline along northern New York, making it a prominent geographic and economic feature for the Empire State.
Hochul responded soon after Trump issued the proclamation, posting on X that “New York won’t be calling it that.”
In another Truth Social post, Trump escalated his criticism of the governor, calling Hochul “stupid” and arguing that Canada has singled out New York with tariffs.
“They’re aiming at her because they consider her Weak and Ineffective — Not nice!” Trump wrote.
“She doesn’t want us to use the name, ‘Lake America,’ she’d rather have Canada get a win,” Trump continued. Adding that Canada treats New York like “garbage.”
Trump concluded both social media posts by urging New Yorkers to vote for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman in November.
“He’s an ‘animal,’ he fights like hell, he doesn’t let anyone else win,” Trump said of Blakeman. “He’s for the people. He’s smart and cunning, and will Lower your Taxes, and Stop Crime.”
The governor’s office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
