Call it a very dark day for Guinness lovers.
British police are investigating the overnight theft of roughly 70,000 pints of Guinness after two trailer loads of the iconic Irish stout vanished from a depot.
The stolen shipment, worth about $155,000, was taken last Monday from an industrial park in Runcorn, near Liverpool, Cheshire Constabulary said.
Authorities said the beer had been headed for pubs when two drivers arrived at the site and drove off with trailers carrying 800 barrels of the dark, creamy brew.
“It is famously said that ‘Guinness is good for you,’ but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for,” Det. Sgt. Gary McClatchy said. “We will settle for nothing less than the full recovery of all the items stolen.”
The Guinness heist follows another major beer theft just weeks earlier, when 34,000 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon were stolen from a warehouse in Southern California.
That haul, valued at $70,000, led Pabst Blue Ribbon to announce a $20,000 reward for tips that could help recover the missing cans.
“To the thief: we don’t fault you for wanting to brag to your friends how much PBR you have, we just wish you obtained it the honorable way,” the company wrote in a playful Instagram post. “P.S. This is real, and we are deadly serious.”
