LOS ANGELES — At least three people died Tuesday evening when a KNBC news helicopter crashed near the site of a fatal bus collision, according to authorities.
The helicopter went down between two commercial buildings in the 9100 block of Mason Avenue in Chatsworth. The Los Angeles Fire Department said three people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another person was transported to a hospital in unknown condition.
An LAFD spokesperson said one of the fatalities was a pedestrian on the ground. Authorities had not determined whether the other victims were inside the helicopter.
Officials also said they did not yet know how many people were aboard the aircraft when it crashed.
Firefighters arriving at the scene found the helicopter completely engulfed in flames.
The blaze damaged four vehicles and two storage containers, according to the fire department.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are expected to investigate the cause of the crash.
The helicopter crash occurred less than a mile from a major bus collision that killed at least two people. Video from the scene showed an SUV lodged against a Metro bus as emergency crews treated victims nearby.
