LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. () — Authorities searched Friday for an “armed and dangerous” suspect after shots were fired at an Indiana State Police trooper in rural LaPorte County, officials said.
The suspect was later found dead, while another person was taken into custody.
At about 3:15 p.m., an Indiana State Police trooper responded to County Road 125 E., south of County Road 900 N., after two people were reportedly seen “acting suspiciously,” officials said.
The trooper located a man and woman and began speaking with them, according to an Indiana State Police update. When the trooper asked the man for identification, the man allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband. The trooper drove away as the man fired, hitting the patrol car twice. The trooper was not injured.
The pair ran into nearby woods, police said. The woman eventually emerged and surrendered, prompting a manhunt for the male suspect.
At approximately 7:40 p.m., an Indiana State Police SWAT team entered a home in the 8300 block of N. 125 E. Inside, officers found the male suspect dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found near him.
The woman, a 20-year-old from Elkhart, Indiana, was taken into custody. Charges against her are pending, police said.
Officials said there is no longer any danger to the public.
