MOUNT DORA, Fla. – Attorneys are expected to make their closing arguments Tuesday in the trial of a woman accused of fatally stabbing an elderly couple inside their Mount Dora senior living apartment.
Vickie Williams faces two first-degree murder charges in connection with the New Year’s Eve 2022 deaths of the couple at their senior living facility.
The defense called its final witness Monday, presenting testimony that Williams was experiencing severe psychosis and schizophrenia when the killings occurred. Prosecutors challenged that claim during rebuttal, calling an expert who testified that Williams does not satisfy the legal requirements for an insanity defense.
Mount Dora police discovered the bodies of the Getmans inside their apartment in December 2022. Investigators said Williams had gone to the couple’s home the previous night, asking to shower and charge her cellphone. By the following morning, the couple had been found dead near the entrance, while their vehicle was missing.
Detectives located Sharon Getman’s cellphone, which had been left in the stolen car, by tracking cellphone signals and license plate-reader data. The investigation led authorities to Savannah, Georgia, where Williams was arrested in January 2023.
Jurors are expected to receive instructions from the judge Tuesday morning before hearing the attorneys’ final arguments.
A conviction could make Williams eligible for the death penalty.
