Caleb Flynn, a former American Idol contestant, broke down in tears Monday after an Ohio judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife.
The 40-year-old was convicted of fatally shooting Ashley Flynn, 37, inside the couple’s home in Tipp City, Ohio, on February 16.
During the sentencing hearing, Flynn trembled and apologized to his family while continuing to deny that he killed Ashley.
“As I stand here before God, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,” Flynn said through sobs. “I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to, as I did not kill my wife.”
His face reddened as he struggled to contain his emotions while relatives read victim impact statements written by his daughters.
“Dear Daddy. I don’t know where to start. How could you do such a thing? I loved you with all my heart. Mommy was the perfect person… what did she ever do to make you hate her so much?” one daughter wrote.
She continued: “I cry and cry every day, and my heart breaks to see the people I love hurt. I’ve seen videos and pictures of you on YouTube. It was your choice to go off with that dirty girl. It was your choice to leave that perfect girl, Ashley. It was your choice to leave your only two daughters. It was your choice to kill the only mother I’ve ever had.”
His other daughter also addressed the court, asking: “Did you ever think about how much pain you would bring your own two daughters?”

Former American Idol singer Caleb Flynn, 40, trembled and apologized to his family during Monday’s sentencing hearing, while maintaining that he did not kill his wife

During Flynn’s two-week trial last month, prosecutors argued that the former music pastor killed his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn, after carrying on a years-long affair
“By the way, Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to you. You decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age,” his daughter said.
She added: “You made me feel like an idiot thinking I could trust you… And by the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.”
Flynn also addressed damaging statements about his wife and family that prosecutors introduced during the trial, saying he did not truly mean the hateful words.
“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed those vows,” Flynn said.
“Although words don’t come close, I cannot apologize enough. You heard awful, hurtful things I said. I am so incredibly sorry.”
He went on: “As horrible as those things were, I want you to know I did not, and do not, mean them. I do not hate you. I love you all.”
Flynn wept as prosecutors urged the judge to impose a life sentence, outlining their case that he killed Ashley and allegedly coached the couple’s children to lie to investigators.
Flynn’s parents also cried in court. In letters submitted to the judge, they pleaded for mercy and said their son was genuinely remorseful.
The judge ultimately sentenced Flynn to life behind bars without parole and condemned the severity of his actions.

Investigators said they found no indication of a home invasion, while prosecutors presented evidence that Flynn and his mistress had repeatedly discussed wanting Ashley dead

Flynn’s 24-year-old mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified that they used hateful language to talk about Ashley
‘Having heard the evidence in this case, the court is left with one clear and obvious conclusion: You pose a serious risk of harm to the public,’ the judge said.
‘In fact, the highest risk. Your actions were abhorrent. The layers of deceit, manipulation, and cruelty you showed are impossible to fathom. And, frankly, sir, you used your faith. The court finds that deeply disturbing. Your marriage did not need to end the way it did.’
Flynn told his daughters he loved them and that they are his ‘greatest joy in this life.’
‘I have so many thoughts and dreams of raising you and seeing you grow up to be mighty women of God, but unfortunately, I can’t. That’s why I’m sorry,’ he said.
During her victim impact statement, Ashley’s sister, Kayla, called out Flynn for putting the family through a public trial.
‘For months, our family prayed that you would confess and own up to all of your actions. But you didn’t. Instead, you chose to drag us through a nationally televised trial,’ she said
‘Someday your daughters may search the internet about the worst night of their lives. They lost their mother, their father, and pretty much everything they’ve owned in one night.’

Flynn’s daughters called his mistress a ‘dirty girl’ and told him they will never visit him in prison during their victim impact statements
During his two-week-long trial last month, prosecutors said the former music pastor shot and killed his wife after having a ‘years-long’ affair with 24-year-old Alleigha Botner, then staged the scene to look like a break-in.
Flynn pleaded not guilty to the charges and insists that a home intruder killed his wife while he slept in a room just feet away with the pair’s two pre-teen daughters.
Investigators testified that they found no evidence to suggest a home invasion had occurred, and prosecutors presented damning evidence that Flynn and his mistress regularly talked about wanting his wife dead.
Botner testified that she was 20 years old when she met Flynn at Christian Life Center in Dayton, Ohio, in 2022, while she worked as an intern and he was either 36 or 37.
She then claimed their relationship became romantic after she went through a breakup in early 2024 and he began to show interest in her.
The mistress confessed that she and Flynn used hateful language to talk about Ashley, calling her ‘spawn of Satan, b****, and douchebag’
She testified that Flynn told her that he hated his wife, and she gave him several ultimatums and deadlines to leave her.
Botner broke down in tears when she was forced to admit that she exchanged messages with Flynn about wanting Ashley dead.
‘Do you know how badly I want to say, “F it,” to any rules and any barriers and just love you with my entire heart for the rest of my life,’ Botner wrote to Flynn on July 10, 2025.
Jurors also heard AI-generated love songs that prosecutors say he made for Botner. Flynn didn’t testify on his own behalf, nor did anybody else.
