Three members of a family were found dead inside a Bay Area residence in what authorities are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide involving a retired police officer, his estranged wife and their adult daughter.
Kevin Mannix, 68, was discovered Sunday evening at the family’s home, valued at about $2 million, in the Strawberry neighborhood of Mill Valley, California.
Mannix, a former San Francisco police sergeant, is believed to have fatally shot his estranged wife, former SFPD Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and their youngest daughter, Katie, 24, before taking his own life, sources told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office were called to the property shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of gunshots coming from inside the home.
‘Within minutes, deputies arrived on scene and made contact with the reporting party, who safely exited the residence. After securing a perimeter, deputies entered the home,’ the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities found three people dead inside and identified them as Kevin, Ann and Katie Mannix. Investigators said there was no continuing danger to the public.
‘The preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals. The suspected shooter is male,’ the sheriff’s office said.
Officials have not disclosed what may have led to the shooting. Detectives are examining the residence as part of the investigation, while autopsies for the Mannix family were scheduled for Tuesday.
