Tropical Storm Rachel floods Las Vegas, prompting water rescues

Nevada was hit by widespread flooding as Tropical Storm Rachel moved through the region.

Dramatic video from Las Vegas showed a woman stranded on the roof of her car while rapidly rising floodwaters surged around her. Several other vehicles were partially submerged, with debris and trash sweeping through the streets.

Emergency responders reached the woman and brought her to safety as the floodwater continued to rise.

Rachel’s heavy rainfall caused flooding across the area and led to dozens of calls for emergency rescues.

Another video showed floodwaters racing through the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday, transforming roads into rivers after more than an inch of rain fell across the city.

The intense rainfall also broke a previous record, making it one of the wettest days ever recorded in Las Vegas.

The flooding came as residents of Long Beach faced devastating damage after powerful waves from Tropical Storm Rachel pounded multimillion-dollar beachfront homes. Properties were destroyed, families were forced to evacuate and sections of a century-old boardwalk were ripped apart.

The worst of the destruction occurred along the city’s Alamitos Peninsula, where enormous waves tore through wooden sections of the historic waterfront boardwalk. Seawater then poured into nearby homes and flooded surrounding streets.

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said at least eight buildings, covering 13 addresses, had been red-tagged as unsafe to enter. Another building received a yellow tag, permitting residents limited access to collect their belongings.

For some residents, the storm brought the heartbreaking sight of their dream homes being consumed by the ocean.

Natalie Cabrera, 59, has lived on the peninsula for just a year and a half. The renter of a beachfront bungalow said she was devastated after the storm damaged the foundation of her home.

“I don’t want to leave. At all. Ever. This was my dream,” Cabrera said.

She said relentless waves repeatedly slammed into the property, forcing water beneath the building and damaging everything inside.

“The floor is squishy. Because the ocean just kept hitting and hitting my home, and the water went underneath,” she said.

“Water didn’t come through my front door. It came up from the ground.” Cabrera said neighbors who had lived in the area for decades had never seen flooding like it.

“My other neighbor’s been here 30 years, and never, ever have they seen this. So I’m a newbie to the neighborhood. And I’m just devastated to have to leave,” she said.

Cabrera said she planned to move to Ontario, where her son and daughter-in-law own a home. “That’s where I grew up. So I guess I’m just going to have to go back,” she said.

Even amid the destruction, Cabrera said she was thankful that her family and neighbors were safe. She also remembered how strangers stepped in to help defend her property from the rising water.

“Everybody just came together, total strangers. There was a young kid from USC, fishing. He saw the devastation of the waves just rushing through my front door, and he came.

“As fast as the water came, they’re shoveling the sand out.”
