Rob and Michele Reiner’s trust fund pays for son Nick's defense in their own murders

Nick Reiner, indicted in the killings of his celebrated Hollywood parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, used money from the family trust to fund his defense in the murder case.

Paul Kanin, the trust’s former administrator, said in court documents obtained by TMZ that the “Being Charlie” writer received nearly $348,000 to pay his former attorney, Alan Jackson.

The funds covered Jackson’s work during the roughly two weeks he represented Nick before withdrawing from the case in January 2026.

“We would ask to withdraw as counsel of record. We have no choice but to withdraw and ask to be relieved,” Jackson told the court at Los Angeles’ Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center on Jan. 7.

In June, Reiner petitioned to access approximately $558,000 from a family trust valued at between $1.5 million and $1.6 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. The funds had originally been scheduled for mandatory distribution when he turned 30 in September 2023.

The petition, obtained by The Post, stated that Nick was entitled to receive half of the trust “outright when he turned 30,” with the remaining half set to be distributed when he reached 35.

However, the trust’s professional fiduciary and trustees have withheld the money under California’s Slayer Statute, which prevents someone from benefiting financially from the estate or trust of a person they intentionally killed.

Reiner’s attorneys counter that the 2023 distribution became mandatory before the 2025 killings. They also argue that the Slayer Statute cannot be applied because Reiner has pleaded not guilty and has not been convicted.
