Multiple people injured in shooting at Bend, Oregon, elementary school, suspect fatally shot: Police

At least five people are believed to have died after a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.

The officials spoke with The Associated Press anonymously because they were not authorized to comment publicly. They cautioned that the reported death toll was preliminary and could change.

Authorities said the suspected shooter was shot and killed inside Silver Rail Elementary School, possibly by a bystander.

Sources told ABC News that the shooter is believed to be a minor.

Authorities believe at least five people are dead following a shooting at an elementary school in Oregon, law enforcement officials tell the AP.

Bend police first received a report shortly before 1 p.m. PT that a shot had been fired into a car outside the school, according to department spokesperson Sheila Miller.

“Within about a minute, we were receiving multiple 911 calls from within the school,” Miller said during a press briefing.

Callers told emergency dispatchers that someone had entered the school and begun firing, police said.

Officers reached the scene minutes later, and the suspect was down within seconds of their arrival, Miller said. It remained unclear who shot the suspect.

Miller said the shooting left multiple people wounded, including children. At least two victims were taken to a nearby hospital, though their conditions were not immediately known.

Law enforcement officers were clearing the school one room at a time. A nearby church was designated as a reunification center for families.

The shooting brought a significant police response to the area.

Caleb Weis, who was riding his motorcycle near the school, told ABC News that the response appeared highly organized.

“Everything they were doing seemed highly trained and highly prepared for this,” Weis said. He added that, unlike at many other incidents, relatively few people appeared to be recording on their phones, describing the scene as marked by shock and deep respect for law enforcement and first responders.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency was at the scene helping with the investigation.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also traveling to the school, according to a source.

All classes, activities and athletic events across Bend-La Pine Schools were canceled for Friday.
