“They’re not coming after me, they’re coming after you.” — Donald Trump, August 2024.
For some conservatives, that warning has taken on new meaning amid claims that federal investigators examined records tied to Trump merchandise purchases. The allegation raises an unsettling question: could buying a red hat or coffee mug really draw government scrutiny?
People in Republican-leaning states may view that possibility as remote. In heavily Democratic states, however, critics of the Biden administration say political surveillance concerns feel less hypothetical. Even an American flag displayed outside a home, they suggest, could attract unwanted attention.
Is that concern simply paranoia?
A letter from Senate Oversight Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley suggests that federal investigators sought information about Americans who purchased Trump campaign merchandise, including details that could identify buyers and their homes.
“Through my oversight, I’ve uncovered” claims that Jack Smith and the Biden Justice Department targeted Americans for purchasing MAGA hats.
Grassley said records reviewed by his office placed at least 639,000 Americans on an “enemies list,” calling the situation indefensible.

Grassley, an Iowa Republican who chairs the Senate Oversight Committee, outlined the allegations in a Wednesday letter to Judiciary Committee Republicans and Ranking Member Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat.
According to Grassley, documents show that Jack Smith’s Special Counsel’s Office and the Biden Justice Department obtained sales information for red MAGA hats, including buyers’ names, purchases and shipping addresses. He also said investigators collected catalogs covering Trump campaign merchandise such as hats, shirts, mugs and doormats, then shared the records with FBI agents. Grassley characterized the material as irrelevant and personally invasive.
The senator said his office also received attachments titled “Trump Save America Merchandise,” “Trump MAGA Hat Orders” and “Trump Victory Call Sheet,” with data contributions dating back to 2005.
The allegations have prompted critics to question how far federal authorities went in collecting information about Trump supporters. If routine purchases such as a doormat were included, they argue, the episode would represent an extraordinary expansion of government scrutiny.
“Wow. The same tactics as a Communist dictator,” one commentator wrote.
Evil Jack Smith’s ‘election investigation’ didn’t stop at Trump. It detailed shipping addresses of ordinary people who bought MAGA hats, plus donor and voter data on 639,000 Republicans dating back to 2005…😳 pic.twitter.com/QR4nBOIN11

Grassley has spent years investigating what he describes as corruption and abuse of power within the Biden-Merrick Garland Justice Department. Supporters say the current administration, led by Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel, has shifted its focus toward fraud, drug trafficking and crimes involving illegal immigrants.
The allegations also have intensified calls for accountability. Critics argue that officials who authorized or handled the records should face consequences if the investigation confirms that Americans were targeted solely because they supported Trump or bought campaign merchandise. They contend that the matter raises serious constitutional and civil-liberties questions.
The controversy now raises another political question: will Adam Schiff respond?
