A teenage gunman who allegedly killed at least three children and an adult at an elementary school in Oregon was fatally shot by an armed bystander, according to law enforcement sources.
The bystander intervened just minutes after police received the first report of a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, sources and police said.
The initial call to dispatchers reported that someone had fired a shot into a car near the school, police spokesperson Sheila Miller told reporters.
The teenage suspect is believed to have shot and killed at least three children and one adult, who was reportedly a teacher.
Two additional children were hospitalized, although their conditions were not immediately known, law enforcement sources said.
Silver Rail Elementary has approximately 400 to 450 students. The school was evacuated following the shooting.
Authorities had not immediately determined where the shooting took place or whether the bystander was legally allowed to carry a firearm near the elementary school campus.
The Bend-La Pine school district had previously prohibited everyone, including people with concealed-carry licenses, from bringing firearms onto district property, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported in 2022.
However, a separate provision of Oregon law permits lawfully owned firearms on school grounds when they are unloaded and secured inside a locked vehicle, the outlet reported.
Local officials were expected to provide further information at another news conference scheduled for approximately 8:30 p.m. EST.
