Police said a 16-year-old gunman opened fire in a parking lot, entered an elementary school and killed three children and a teacher in a three-minute attack before a bystander fatally shot him.
The teenager, whose identity has not been released, used his mother’s pump-action shotgun to fire at a man’s truck outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. According to police, the truck driver called to report an active shooter at about 12:59 p.m.
The shooter then ran toward the school and fired several rounds at the building’s locks, police said.
At about 1 p.m., Deschutes County dispatchers began receiving multiple reports that someone had entered the school and was shooting. An emergency alert was issued, directing all available law enforcement officers to the scene.
Officers arrived at the school at 1:02 p.m., but the suspect had already been killed.
