Smoked salmon recalled over fears of contamination with fatal bacteria

Packaged smoked salmon sold across six states has been recalled over concerns that it may be contaminated with Listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria.

New York-based Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc is voluntarily recalling its frozen Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon after possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium responsible for listeriosis.

The recalled smoked salmon comes in 8-ounce (227-gram) vacuum-sealed plastic packages sold under the Starfish Seafood brand.

The product was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Consumers can identify it by lot number D080-148.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc launched the recall after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets detected the potential contamination.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled salmon.

The company is a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the product. The salmon’s listed country of origin is Latvia.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc is working with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets on the recall. The company has notified affected customers and asked them to stop using or distributing the salmon and to alert their own customers.

Smoked Salmon Recalled Over Fears of Deadly Bacterial Contamination

An urgent recall has been issued for packaged smoked salmon sold in six states because of possible contamination with Listeria (stock)

The same bacteria were cited in another recall announced by the company on Monday. Its Starfish Seafood Trio — Cold Smoked Salmon, Halibut and Trout — was removed from store shelves over concerns about possible Listeria contamination.

The FDA notice advises anyone who bought the recalled smoked salmon not to eat it and to return it to the place of purchase.

It remains unclear how the salmon may have been contaminated. Listeria contamination can occur through contact with contaminated soil, water, decaying vegetation or animal manure.

On Monday, Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc also recalled its seafood trio mix because of possible Listeria contamination.

That recall involved 8-ounce (227-gram) vacuum-sealed plastic packages sold under the Starfish brand. The products were distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The seafood trio mix bears lot number D139149161-153 and has an expiration date of December 1, 2027.

The cause of the possible Listeria contamination in the seafood trio mix is also unknown. No illnesses had been reported in connection with that recall.

Listeria can be present in a range of foods, but it is commonly associated with unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses and ready-to-eat products such as prepackaged sandwiches.

Other foods that may carry the bacteria include cooked shellfish, cured meats and fish, sushi and precut fruit.

While most of the 1,250 Americans infected with listeria each year recover on their own, the infection can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

About 250 Americans die of the infection each year, which can occur if the infection spreads beyond the gut and affects the central nervous system.
