Beastmaster star Marc Singer rushed to hospital in LA following health scare

Actor Marc Singer was transported by ambulance to a Los Angeles-area hospital on Saturday after experiencing pain.

Paramedics arrived at the Southern California home of the Vancouver-born actor, 78, at about 2 p.m. and took him to a nearby medical facility, sources told TMZ on Sunday.

Singer, best known for playing Dar in the 1982 fantasy film The Beastmaster, underwent a series of medical tests and remained in the hospital through Saturday evening, according to the outlet.

Sources told TMZ that doctors cleared Singer physically after the tests and expected him to leave the hospital on Sunday.

The actor has maintained a career in Hollywood spanning more than 50 years. His best-known television credits include V, Dallas and The Young and the Restless.

The Daily Mail has contacted Singer’s representatives for additional comment.

Singer played the warrior Dar throughout the Beastmaster franchise, appearing in the original 1982 film, the 1991 sequel Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time and the 1996 television movie Beastmaster III: The Eye of Braxus.

In a 2024 interview with AV Club, Singer said his work in Shakespeare, including The Taming of the Shrew, helped lead to his casting in The Beastmaster.

He recalled that writer-director Don Coscarelli had seen his performance and declared, “That’s the guy I want to play Dar!” Singer said the role came together without a traditional audition: “There was really no casting. There was just a meeting.”

“We met, and we had a conversation and, man, we got right at it!” he said. “The next thing I knew, I was being fitted for my little leather hula skirt, and off we went into the desert.”

He returned to the franchise in 2001 and 2002, appearing in seven episodes of the television adaptation as Dartanus.

Singer also became closely associated with the V franchise. He played Mike Donovan in 19 episodes from 1984 to 1985, appeared in three episodes of the 1984 miniseries V: The Final Battle and featured in two episodes of the original 1983 miniseries. In the revived version of V, he played Lars Tremont in 2011.

Singer’s most recent television appearance was on The Varnell Hill Show earlier this year. His other recent credits include Beauty and the Beast in 2016, Arrow in 2015 and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior in 2011.

His television work has also included Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show in 1998, Highlander in 1992 and Batman: The Animated Series in 1992.

His 1980s television credits included Murder, She Wrote, Simon & Simon, The Twilight Zone, Hotel, Dallas, The Love Boat and CHiPs.

During the 1970s, Singer appeared in projects including the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations, as well as Jigsaw John, Barnaby Jones, Hawaii Five-O and Columbo.

The Hollywood veteran opened up on his life philosophies in a 2021 interview with NY Castings.

‘I try to be a man of my word, fulfill my obligations and hope that my word works for good – or at least works good enough,’ Singer said. ‘I don’t know how I got that philosophy, but I’m guessing my upbringing had a lot to do with it.

‘That and the good fortune of meeting some fine mentors along the way.’

He added, ‘Other than my dad, I’d have to list so many more in that regard, that it’d just be a jumble of names, so just suffice it to say I’ve been well and truly schooled, and that some of it stuck.’

In the 2021 interview, Singer said major differences working on sets over the decades are the bright studio lights and presence of cigarettes.

‘The lights that were required in the past could melt a candle at a hundred paces!’ he said. ‘They could ignite your hair at a fifty yards! Makeup ran in rivers down your spine. Retinas cringed in pain. The lights… now you can film practically in the dark.’

As for smoking, Singer said there ‘used to be clouds of’ cigarette smoke on the sets with cans everywhere to collect the butts.
