Airbnb Hosts Upset Over New Rules Limiting Guest Checkout Chores
Airbnb Hosts Upset Over New Rules Limiting Guest Checkout Chores

Airbnb has tightened its rules on the checkout tasks hosts can ask guests to complete, prompting a wave of social media videos debating who should really load the dishwasher.

The crackdown on checkout chores has angered some hosts, who have turned to TikTok to warn that they may now need to raise prices, pay for additional cleaning help or leave the platform altogether.

Announced on October 20 and scheduled to take effect on November 20, the changes prohibit hosts from requiring guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry or take garbage off the property.

Guests may still be asked to place dirty dishes in the sink, collect used towels and sort trash and recycling into designated indoor bins.

For some hosts, however, losing the option to ask guests to start the dishwasher has been treated as a major blow.

Realtor and Airbnb host Vicki Martin waded into the row in a video, declaring: ‘I think I’m gonna start some s*** on the internet today.’

Martin, who operates a dog-friendly Airbnb, showed viewers the tasks she has previously asked guests to handle, including loading the dishwasher, stripping beds and separating human linens from dog bedding.

She emphasized that she still washes everything herself, but said guests taking care of those smaller jobs helped her keep rates lower and provide benefits such as early check-ins.

Other owners have made a similar case, arguing that seemingly minor checkout duties can add substantial time to the process of preparing a property for the next guest.

One host likened the policy shift to Airbnb becoming more like a hotel, saying guests once recognized that vacation rentals came with a different set of responsibilities.

Another said stripping beds had been ‘always a huge help’ for cleaners and cautioned that removing checkout lists could make it take longer to prepare properties between stays.

A commenter who favored the former rules called the end of checkout chore lists a ‘big bummer’ for cleaners. Without guests handling those tasks, the commenter said cleaners could have less time for deep cleaning, restocking, porch tidying and window washing.

The commenter also said laundry and making beds already required considerable time, predicting that hosts might be forced to schedule later check-ins and earlier checkouts. Stripping the beds, they added, had been ‘a huge help’ to cleaners.

Greenville, South Carolina, Airbnb hosts Gabriel and Laura Valk provided a particularly revealing look at the dispute in a video that has since been removed from their TikTok account.

The couple complained about cleaning their Airbnb while caring for their newborn daughter. In a separate video, Laura said she was racing against the clock because another guest was checking in that day.

Laura said the cleaning took roughly two-and-a-half to three hours and described it as ‘really hard,’ explaining that both she and her daughter ultimately had meltdowns.

In another section of the video, the couple questioned why hosts could no longer ask guests to take out the trash or start the dishwasher.

They noted that a dishwasher cycle can last about two hours and joked that they could clean an entire Airbnb in the same amount of time.

Laura also reacted with disgust when she discovered hosts would no longer be able to require guests to remove sheets from beds

Separate video commentary took a swipe at the outrage.

‘You’re in the wrong business,’ said one narrator in response to Martin’s complaints, arguing that hosts could hire cleaners if they did not want to handle used sheets themselves.

The clip captured the wider divide perfectly: hosts see checkout chores as a practical way of keeping turnover costs under control, while critics see them as asking vacationers to do unpaid housekeeping after already paying a cleaning fee.

And social media has been awash with increasingly dramatic warnings from owners who say the changes could fundamentally alter their businesses.

One host declared that November 19 would be the final day their properties appeared on Airbnb, writing: ‘Once again AIRBNB has forgotten who owns the property.’

Another said the changes were particularly alarming because they feared guests might interpret the new rules as meaning they could simply ‘do whatever you want’ inside a rental.

One commenter said they were already fed up with Airbnb allegedly siding with guests and claimed the new rules had convinced them to move entirely to Booking.com.

Another simply wrote: ‘Lmao. Still won’t use air bnb. My hotel takes care of the rest.’

There was also a more measured camp, with one host saying their checkout instructions were simply: ‘You are my guest. We will take care of the details. Just enjoy your vacation.’

Others argued that hosts had brought the problem on themselves by imposing excessive chore lists, with one commenter saying guests should never have been expected to clean in the first place.

Airbnb says the new policy is intended to make checkout simpler and prevent guests from encountering unexpected chores after booking.

Hosts will still be able to set rules around issues including pets, smoking, quiet hours, events, maximum overnight guests and locking up at checkout.

They must also disclose their rules in the designated section of the listing before guests book rather than introducing new requirements through messages or signs inside the property.

Airbnb says guests are still expected to treat homes responsibly, avoid excessive or deep cleaning and pay for damage they cause.

For travelers, the great Airbnb chore war may therefore have a simple winner: the person who gets to close the door, wheel their suitcase away and leave the dirty sheets behind.

For hosts, however, the battle is only just beginning – and some are already threatening to take their properties with them.
