Police Update Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Case as Month 9 Nears

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that investigators remain focused on DNA analysis as they work with the Nancy Guthrie Task Force to advance the investigation into her disappearance.

“Earlier this month, investigators traveled to Florida to meet with lab scientists to see what more could be done to advance this case,” the department said in a post on X. “A number of ideas were discussed, and we continue to work with all our partners to solve this case.”

The department also urged the public to remember that even the smallest tip could prove valuable.

“Even the smallest piece of information could be critical to this investigation,” the agency said.

Guthrie, the mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, was kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona, home on Feb. 1.

The 84-year-old was last seen shortly before 10 p.m. on Jan. 31, after a relative dropped her off at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood.

Investigators have yet to identify a suspect or person of interest, despite footage from Guthrie’s Ring doorbell camera appearing to show a masked man.

In the days after Guthrie vanished, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said she had been taken. During a news briefing, he stated, “She did not leave on her own. We know that.”

Authorities released two ransom notes connected to the kidnapping in July.

Latest developments in the search for Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie

The first note, sent Feb. 2, claimed Guthrie was unharmed and demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency in exchange for her release.

The second note, sent four days later on Feb. 6, claimed that Guthrie had died soon after being kidnapped.

When the notes were released in late July, authorities said they featured a distinctive writing style and asked anyone who recognized the patterns to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department or the FBI.

In late September, investigators said they had learned of a possible new ransom note tied to Guthrie’s disappearance.

“The PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” the sheriff’s department said in a post on X.

“Investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the note and are looking further into the information to determine its credibility.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call 520-88-CRIME.
