KYIV – Missile blasts rocked Kyiv early Saturday, injuring at least five people as Ukraine prepared for fresh talks next week with Russia and the United States.
Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. negotiators are scheduled to meet Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, for discussions aimed at ending the war. The meeting would be the fourth round brokered by the Trump administration, following the latest negotiations in Geneva in February.
Western governments supporting the peace effort are searching for a way to overcome the stalemate, while recognizing that major disputes over territory and security remain unresolved.
The overnight Russian missile strikes damaged residential buildings and commercial properties, forced the closure of a Kyiv bridge spanning the Dnipro River, and caused further power and water disruptions, according to national and city authorities.
“As a result of the enemy’s night attack, energy facilities in the Kyiv and … Zhytomyr regions were damaged,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. “The situation with the capital’s energy supply is extremely difficult, affecting the city’s heating and water supply systems.”
In southern Ukraine, recovery efforts continued in Komyshuvakha, where several Russian guided bombs struck a former school and a nearby shelter on Monday as residents gathered to receive humanitarian aid.
The attack killed 55 people, with two more bodies recovered early Saturday, and dozens remain missing. The former school had been converted into an aid distribution center.
Komyshuvakha lies near the front line in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region.
