Alexis Mac Allister is set to be out of action until January as Liverpool confirmed a mixed bag of injury news on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face West Ham in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before hosting Arsenal in a crucial top-of-the-table Premier League clash on Saturday.

The Reds have suffered a number of injury blows in recent weeks, and ahead of tomorrow’s clash with the Hammers, assistant manager Pep Ljinders has provided updates on Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Diogo Jota and Ben Doak.

Ljinders said: ‘Alexis is progressing well, he doesn’t have pain anymore, which is a good thing. It was worse than we first thought, but he is progressing well, no pain. Let’s see if we can progress him.’

The 24-year-old has missed recent games after he required two stitches following a deep cut to the knee after suffering a bad challenge against Sheffield United earlier this month.

In the days after the match, Klopp admitted that Mac Allister’s injury was ‘a bit more tricky than we thought’.

The biggest blow though comes from Scottish youngster Doak, who Ljinders confirmed has suffered a torn lateral meniscus which will require surgery.

Doak suffered the injury while playing for Liverpool’s Under-21s against Chelsea on Sunday.

Ljinders also provided positive updates on Gravenberch and Jota.

Gravenberch was forced off in the second half of Sunday’s stalemate with Manchester United at Anfield, but scan results have revealed that he has not suffered a hamstring injury.

‘We thought there was really something, he came off during the game and you saw immediately when he came off what that did to the team as well, he was playing really well,’ Ljinders said in his pre-match press conference.

‘Especially against these man-marking sides he plays unbelievable. But he had a scan and it’s only DOMS, which is fatigue, so that’s a really good thing. He will train hopefully today, let’s see where he is. We have to be careful of course because that’s a sign. So that’s a good one.’

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

Jota meanwhile has not featured since the 1-1 draw against Man City last month, but his return is getting closer.

Ljinders said: ‘Diogo is doing ball work on the pitch so that is getting closer and closer. But always with hamstring injuries you have to be careful, we always say when they come back give them another two or three days for sure.’
