Netherlands skipper Virgil van Dijk took issue with the state of the pitch in their 1-0 win against Greece in EURO 2024 qualifying. 

The 32-year-old was his country’s saviour with a last minute penalty which secured a crucial win and lifted them above Greece in the Group B standings. 

Despite the triumph, Van Dijk voiced his displeasure with the conditions at the Agia Sophia Stadium in Athens. 

The Liverpool captain’s heorics came on a nervy night for Ronald Koeman’ side after former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst missed a spot kick in the first-half.

Defeat for Orangje would have left them six points behind their hosts following a demoralising loss to France on Friday night. 

French superstar Kylian Mbappe scored a spectatular winner to maintain the team’s 100 percent record in qualifying but Van Dijk again aimed his ire at the surface – despite the fixture taking place at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. 

Regardless, the defender’s successful conversion on Monday moved the Netherlands back into the qualification spots with two very winnable games remaining. 

The 1988 European Championship winners welcome Ireland next month before travelling to minnows Gibraltar on the final matchday.
