Corruption Investigation
In 2012, Cristina’s husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, came under investigation in the Nóos case, which centered on allegations that millions in public funds had been obtained through fraudulent activity. Cristina was formally named as a suspect the following year. In early 2014, a Spanish judge charged her with tax fraud and money laundering. She later appeared in court and denied any knowledge of her husband’s illegal dealings. Later that year, a high court upheld the tax fraud charges while dismissing the money laundering allegations. In mid-2015, her brother stripped her of the dukedom. Cristina went on trial in Palma de Mallorca in early 2016 and again denied awareness of her husband’s actions.
