Skeletal remains have been found inside an empty Manhattan brownstone where a homeless veteran was believed to have been staying, according to authorities and published reports.
NYPD officers discovered the skeletonized body after responding around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday to the building on East 115th Street between Second and Third Avenues in East Harlem, police said.
The remains were initially spotted by a representative of the property owner who had gone to inspect the vacant three-story row house, Gothamist reported.
Public records cited by the outlet show that a 311 complaint filed last year described the property as an abandoned drug rehabilitation facility and alleged that a homeless veteran had been living there for at least two years.
How long the building has been unoccupied remains unclear.
The city Medical Examiner’s office is conducting a forensic review to determine and confirm the identity of the remains.
The investigation is continuing.
