Emergency services rushed to a unit complex on Marion Road in Brooklyn Park after the Nissan SUV was found alight before 9pm last night.
Nearby residents called Triple Zero after they smelt smoke and saw the flames burning dangerously close to homes.
“I was a bit scared because it was so close to our house, but first thing I did was tell mum,” a resident told 9News.
Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze but the Nissan was extensively damaged.
Police said checks revealed the car was allegedly stolen from a home in nearby Underdale hours earlier.
Residents who live near the unit block said there have been similar incidents in recent years and some people don’t feel safe in the neighbourhood.
“I feel for the owner of the vehicle, there goes a bit of money, hard-earned cash down the drain,” a resident said.
“Not surprised, it’s not the first time this has happened, it’s probably the third time since we’ve been here that there’s been a fire in that area.”
A car was set on fire in the same carport in 2023.
“It’s been ongoing I think, so starting to feel not as safe anymore,” another resident said.
Police are investigating the cause of last night’s fire.
