Police Find 3 Children, Disabled Adult Living in Squalor with Rotted Food, Feces Everywhere

In Kentucky, authorities apprehended three individuals after discovering three children and a disabled adult living in conditions that one officer described as the “worst” they had ever encountered.

Officers carried out a search warrant at a residence in Harrodsburg around 11:30 p.m. last week as part of a child neglect probe, according to WDKY. They discovered three children below the age of 12 and an adult with the mental development of a 6th grader. Upon entering the home, they were hit by a powerful odor of feces and ammonia.

“The floor was coated in feces, and all surfaces were littered with waste like decaying food,” detailed an arrest report. “There was a lock on the refrigerator, which was filled with spoiled food and cockroaches, and none of the food I saw in the house was safe for consumption.”

One of the children told officers they had only had cereal to eat all day, according to WKYT.

The police report said three dogs and five cats also lived in the home, and the feces they found was a mix of human and animal. One occupant said the children were often sick, likely because of the condition of the home.

The home was declared unfit for human habitation.

Police arrested Amy Nichols, 30, charging her with criminal abuse of a child, abuse/neglect of an adult, and cruelty to animal. Robert Ransdell, 38, and Matthew Hardin, 26, were each charged with complicity to those charges.

Media reports did not say how the three people were connected with each other or any of the victims. They also did not say what happened to the victims.
