A significant DNA breakthrough has resulted in the arrest of a 65-year-old man, nearly 30 years after a nine-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted on the New South Wales Central Coast.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 26, 1996, when the young boy was assaulted by an unknown assailant.

Despite efforts by detectives at the time, no arrests were made. However, recent advancements in forensic DNA technology and ongoing investigations have led to a major development in the case.

Authorities have now detained a 65-year-old man at Bathurst Police Station. He faces charges of engaging in sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 10 and attempting sexual intercourse with a person under 10.

The accused has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in the Bail Division Court 4 today.

He was refused bail and will face the Bail Division Court 4 today.

At the time of the alleged sexual assault, the man would have been 35 or 36.
