Drunk Driver Leaving Ritz-Carlton Killed Sleeping 82-Year-Old: Police

A Florida driver accused of plowing through a stop sign and smashing into a Coral Gables home had a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit after the crash, police said. Inside the house, 82-year-old Henri Bezy was asleep in bed when the vehicle landed on top of him, killing him, according to investigators.

Allen Matis, 67, is facing charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide in connection with Bezy’s death.

According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, the fatal crash happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. on June 24 near the intersection of SW 57th Avenue and SW 29th Street in Coral Gables.

Investigators said Matis was behind the wheel of a 2025 Cadillac Lyriq traveling on 29th Street when he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign at 57th Avenue. The SUV then slammed into the residence, breaking through an exterior wall, police said. Bezy, who was in his bed at the time, was struck and pinned beneath the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy found that Bezy died from blunt force trauma and traumatic asphyxia.

Police said Matis showed signs of intoxication after the crash, and officers obtained three blood samples from him in the hours that followed. The affidavit lists his blood alcohol content at .290, .262 and .245.

Vehicle data cited by investigators allegedly showed Matis was traveling about 43 mph at the moment of impact — and that he never applied the brakes.

Cops arrested Matis on Wednesday.

Prosecutors provided more details about the case during a bond hearing Thursday while arguing Matis should remain behind bars.

“The fact that the defendant volunteered that he had been at the Ritz-Carlton prior to this crash is that he got so drunk at that location that he must have driven right past his own home,” a prosecutor said, according to a courtroom report from local ABC affiliate WPLG.

A judge denied Matis bond. He has another hearing on Friday.
