A Florida man who allegedly stole a tour train and picked up passengers while he was high on methamphetamine later told cops it was his birthday.

As reported by an arrest document acquired by local ABC affiliate WPLG, law enforcement responded to alerts from a Conch Tour Train Depot in Key West on July 4 concerning a missing train. The train was being monitored throughout the city via its attached GPS device. Upon arrival, officers were informed by staff that a man had showed up at the depot, claiming to be a former worker. He requested a tour of the Conch Train, which an employee permitted. Subsequently, the man reportedly drove the train away from the premises.

That man was Jonathan Patrick Winslow, and he was celebrating his 57th birthday.

According to the arrest report, Winslow left his Kia at the depot, still running “with rock music playing on the radio.”

The alleged joyride involving Winslow didn’t extend for long, though it did allow him to pick up “two random passengers,” who might not have been aware that their Conch Train driver lacked authorization. According to the police, Winslow abandoned the train at some stage, and it was found without a hitch. Authorities soon after found Winslow, who was allegedly “excited” and speaking very rapidly.

Upon notifying Winslow about the charges he would face for taking the Conch Train, he reportedly claimed he merely “borrowed” it, explaining that “today [was] his birthday.”
